Q&A with Podkin One Ear author Kieran Larwood

The magic of the World of Podkin One Ear series has been popular with young readers and as class sets for almost a decade and has this year drawn to a close.

We asked Kieran Larwood all about the epic adventure and what it was like saying goodbye.

~

Podkin has been out in the world for almost 10 years now, probably with you longer! How are you feeling about farewelling the world and its inhabitants?

Even though I had planned out the ending years ago, it surprised me how hard it was to write! I really didn’t want to say goodbye to those characters who have been with me every day for a decade, and now there is a big Podkin-shaped hole in my life.

What started you off on creating this epic children’s classic and has it gone where you thought it might?

It all began with some sketches of rabbits with swords and shields I had doodled in my notebooks. I thought they would make great characters for a fantasy world. When I wrote the first book, I purposely didn’t plan any more, so when I was asked to develop it into a series it was a nice surprise. I definitely had no idea I would spend the next ten years working on it!

Of all Podkin and his friends’ adventures which was the one child Kieran would most have loved to be a part of, is it the same one adult Kieran would?

Most of Podkin’s adventures have been pretty scary! I think the child me would have loved to sail on a pirate ship and battle sea monsters, whereas now I would be much happier visiting the Forest Wardens in their peaceful woodland home.

How did illustrations get chosen, were you able to suggest parts that you wanted to see brought to life?

My publishers chose David Wyatt to illustrate the books and Fernando Juarez to do the covers, and I couldn’t be happier with their selections! I always get input as to which parts I think should be illustrated, and I also see the roughs so I can suggest any changes (I hardly ever have to do that, because they are both such amazing artists).

Have you had any memorable questions or comments from young fans at your events?

I sometimes get caught out because they remember details that I have forgotten! Some of them come to my events in full rabbit costume, which I think is fantastic.

What is your hope readers just starting the series will love and take from this treasured series?

Above all, I hope it is an epic world they can get lost in, just as I got lost in books like ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘A Wizard of Eathsea’ when I was their age. I also hope they learn something about the power and importance of stories and take the main messages to heart: even the smallest person can achieve great things and that love is stronger than hate.
