BBC 500 Words Writing Competition – Inspiring Young Authors

The BBC 500 Words Writing Competition is the UK’s most prestigious short story contest for children. Open to children aged 5–11 across the country, this exciting competition invites young writers to submit original stories of no more than 500 words. It’s a brilliant opportunity to spark creativity and encourage a love of storytelling in the next generation of authors.

Launched by Chris Evans in 2011 and now hosted by BBC Radio 2, 500 Words has inspired hundreds of thousands of children to put pen to paper. The competition is split into two age categories: 5–7 and 8–11, and is open to schools, home-educated pupils, and individual entries. The stories are judged anonymously by a panel of expert authors and editors, with incredible prizes for the winners, including the chance to have their story read by a celebrity and broadcast on the BBC.

Submissions open in September and close in October, so there’s plenty of time to get involved.

Visit the official BBC 500 Words website for full details, entry guidelines, and inspiration. Good luck!
