Library Corner is a little space for school librarians to share what’s happening in their libraries!

The value of libraries and reading for pleasure cannot be overstated and we know school librarians are the key to making the very most of library spaces.

Many thanks to this month’s librarian Kate Lock from Harris Academy Sutton.

How's the library at the start of the school year?

The library has been buzzing with our new Year 7 cohort eager to learn how the library works!

Questions like ‘How many books can we borrow?’ ‘Do we have to pay?’ and perhaps unsurprisingly ‘Where’s the manga?’ (note from Monica at Heath’s if you’re looking for Manga for school libraries – it is often reprinting so the easiest way to find out what’s currently available is by getting in touch:) ).

Thankfully the questions have been answered and the borrowing has begun, with library staples being popular for their first foray into the secondary school library.

Crime and mystery stories are still the genre of choice for most – Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens is still popular!  Front Desk by Kelly Yang, The Clockwork Conspiracy by Sam Sedgman (who visited last year) as well as Heartstopper Volumes 1&2 being the most borrowed titles so far this term.

What are your current displays looking like?

Alongside new books on display we have also celebrated European Day of Languages and highlighted ‘Banned Books’ to promote our freedom to read and learn from others’ experiences.

Our biggest and fullest display is for Black History Month which offers the opportunity to educate and entertain both students and staff with a mix of fiction and non-fiction covering history, culture and stories about friendship and community.

What's on the horizon at Harris Sutton?

We’ll soon be recruiting Year 7 librarians to join the team – this is always a fun part of the library year.

They’ll get to experience the joys of shelving and the very exciting occasions when a delivery of new books arrives from Heath’s.

We’ll continue to run book clubs for Key Stage 3 and hopefully introduce one for our 6th Form after the October half term.
