Sarah Merrett’s new children’s book A Place of a Thousand Wishes is a step into history, a magical adventure and an atmospheric performance all rolled into one.   Set during Victorian times, Sarah’s story calls upon perhaps a rather lesser known industry of the time.  Mason, a nearing rock bottom ice cream seller meets a mysterious and magnificent showman and his life won’t ever be the same.  This title, illustrated throughout by Ewa Beniak-Haremska, will suit Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 readers curious about history that includes a touch of magic and a great deal of hope.

Sarah has very kindly written about A Place of a Thousand Wishes and shared some of Ewa’s illustrations with us below…

From the outset, I wanted to write a story set in the past as an escape from modern life. I was keen to show something different to the typical Victorian life most children have heard about, and this was to be an uplifting story, full of hope and a sprinkling of magic.

I chose to write about a Victorian performer, but not an ordinary magician or singer like the ones that drew big crowds to the theatres and music halls of the 1800s. When researching, I came across an atmospheric photograph of a performer creating giant bubbles beside a moonlit lake, and Darlington the Miraculous evolved from there. He’s a showman offering a unique and captivating performance – a man of great presence and generosity, who’s not out to make money, but to make people’s lives better. Darlington is world famous for creating incredible bubbles of every imaginable shape, size and colour using his magical sceptre. At the end of each performance, he invites one lucky person on stage and puts their greatest wish inside a bubble, then sends it up to the stars. What an enticing idea this would surely have been to a poor Victorian child with very little hope of ever bettering their life. To make it even more enticing, the performances would be held in a magical manor house in the countryside, with free food and drink. But only the lucky few would be invited.

I had a lot of fun creating Darlington Manor, a beautiful country mansion filled with quirkiness. The labyrinth of unusual rooms is the perfect place to go on an adventure and solve a mystery. I’ve always been fascinated by interesting historical buildings. As a child, I went to various schools in old, creepy buildings that I was sure were haunted. These places had a huge impact on me and sparked my imagination. To my mind, the most exciting things always happen in strange old places dripping with atmosphere.

I wanted my main character to be a child who needs a wish more than anyone. A boy who, despite working hard and dreaming big, has hit rock-bottom in life. I chose to give him an unusual job – something not normally associated with Victorians – and so my main character Mason became an ice cream seller making the world’s best ice cream. But the business is destined to fail. I set the story in 1899 when there was a significant heatwave in real life. It was fascinating researching all about the booming ice cream trade back then, which relied on ice cut from frozen mountain lakes in Norway, imported to the UK on ice ships.

It’s no coincidence that Mason was drawn to ice cream making. He comes to discover he has a gift of being able to manipulate and control water using his mind, just like Darlington the Miraculous. He’s a special boy in many ways. He’s kind and selfless, qualities the world needs more of. He’s had a tough life and fallen on hard times, but he’s driven by hope, and is determined to make a better life for his father and himself, and everyone else he encounters along the way. His optimism is tested, and he faces adversity at every turn, but remains resolute.

I hope readers will find the story uplifting as they journey with Mason on his magical adventure. He demonstrates the importance of being resilient, and even in the darkness moments, holding onto the hope that things will get better.

The book is stunningly Illustrated by Ewa Beniak-Haremska, who has perfectly captured the magic and atmosphere of the story.
