Henrietta Branford Writing Competition – A Unique Opportunity for Young Writers
Calling all budding writers aged 19 and under! The Henrietta Branford Writing Competition offers a fantastic opportunity for young people across the UK to showcase their creativity and writing talent. Held in memory of the beloved children’s author Henrietta Branford, this annual competition runs alongside the prestigious Branford Boase Award, which celebrates outstanding debut novels for children.
Each year, entrants are invited to complete a story begun by a well-known author. The 2025 starter story will be written by a Branford Boase Award-shortlisted author, inspiring pupils to let their imaginations fly. Stories can be up to 1,000 words and must be the original work of the entrant.
The competition is open to all young writers aged 19 and under and is free to enter. Winning entries will be published on the Branford Boase Award website, and winners will be invited to a special prize-giving event in London, meeting published authors and industry professionals.
Perfect for classroom or homework projects, the competition supports literacy, creativity, and confidence in writing. Entries must be submitted by the closing date in May 2025.
