This edition includes an Introduction and Notes by Dr Sally Minogue, Canterbury Christ Church University College. Few works of English fiction have proved as enduringly popular, or as great, as Jane Eyre.
Plain in appearance but far from ordinary in spirit, the poor yet plucky heroine possesses an indomitable will, a sharp wit and great courage, all of which she needs to battle a cruel guardian, a harsh employer and a rigid social order. These constraints shape her life and position when she takes up a post as governess to the daughter of the mysterious, sardonic and attractive Mr Rochester. Yet beneath the hardship lies great kindness and warmth in this epic love story, set against the magnificent backdrop of the Yorkshire moors. In the end, the grand passion between Jane and Rochester must survive cruel revelation, loss and reunion, only to be confronted with tragedy.
