Widely acclaimed as Shakespeare’s most powerful tragedy, King Lear is elemental and passionate, spanning everything from the horrific to the heart-rending. Love contends with hate, loyalty with treachery, cruelty with self-sacrifice, in a tempestuous drama that has become an enduring classic of world literature, still capable of challenging and enthralling audiences on stage and screen alike. This Wordsworth edition offers a comprehensive, integrated text of the play, edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex, as part of the Wordsworth Classics’ Shakespeare Series, which presents a newly-edited sequence of Shakespeare’s works with textual editing that takes account of recent scholarship while offering a careful reappraisal.
