George Cruickshank provides the illustrations for this edition, which carries an Introduction and Notes by Dr Ella Westland of the University of Exeter. Dickens had already made his name with The Pickwick Papers, but it was Oliver Twist that deepened and confirmed his reputation. Grinding poverty, desperation, fear and temptation run through the novel alongside its ultimate insistence that good will triumph over adversity. Among its enduring characters are Oliver himself, who famously dares to ask for more, the tyrannical Bumble, the diabolical Fagin, the menacing Bill Sikes, Nancy and ‘the Artful Dodger’. Anyone setting out to explore the work of this great Victorian literary colossus will find Oliver Twist an essential starting point.
